Decentraland is a virtual reality platform powered by the Ethereum blockchain. It allows users to create, experience, and monetize content and applications. In Decentraland, users can purchase land on a blockchain-based ledger of parcels. Once obtained, the land remains under the ownership of the land owner unless they decide to sell it. The content created on Decentraland is stored on a decentralized network that requires no central server.
By purchasing land, the user gains full control over their virtual space. Each parcel of land is 10m by 10m (33ft by 33ft).
Building takes place inside three-dimensional “scenes” which are analogous to the “rooms” in a video game. This is done using our SDK (software development kit).
Content hosted on Decentraland is distributed using torrents and IPFS (InterPlanetary File System), which makes it difficult for any one entity to censor or control what content is accessed by users.
One way to build scenes is to use procedural generation tools within the SDK, this allows users to create realistic 3D scenes with much less effort than traditional modeling would require.
Users access content in Decentraland through an VR headset like the Oculus Rift, or through a web browser after installing the MetaMask plugin. Users must pay transaction fees in Mana, Decentraland’s cryptocurrency token, to interact with the world by moving, interacting with objects or buying and selling land.
Users are incentivized to buy land by scarcity – only a limited number of plots were created during the Genesis event – as well as potential appreciation in value due to demand for scarce virtual real estate.
The foundation promotes projects that benefit Decentraland and its community, including third-party tools that enhance the development experience.
Decentraland is a completely decentralized platform, meaning there are no central servers or single points of failure. All content in Decentraland is distributed across a peer-to-peer network which makes it difficult to censor or control what users access on the network.
